Not everyone who reads about www.meine-ernte.de is so decided that they sign up within 15mins like me, so Wanda and Natalie (co-founders of Meine Ernte) hold info-sessions a couple of weeks before the plots are assigned. Last Tuesday it was Cologne’s turn – about 25
people turned up at the La Cava tree nursery and Wanda answered all our questions and told us what our farmer – Mr Niehl – will be sowing for us: sunflowers, potatoes, parsnips, red cabbage, white cabbage, cauliflower, kohlrabi, leeks, salads, sweetcorn, Hokkaido pumpkins, marrows, fennel, broad beans, bush beans, courgettes, herbs, spinach, onions, carrots, flowers, peas, chard, radishes, beetroot.
After all the questions had been answered we had a look at the sight of our field. Our plots will be about 2m wide and 23m long (23m is the distance between Wanda and I in the photograph on the right). One little hitch at the moment is that the city of cologne has stated that they are checking the proposal and won’t give their approval until they have finished… but our farmer has another field just around the corner which already has approval (I assume it lies outside the city boundaries). The plots will be allocated on the 10th May – so the big day is coming closer!
